Indian Expertise on China

Image
Based on a thought provoking tweet by a colleague Dr. Rajiv Ranjan, Assistant Professor at ShanghaiUniversity and Adjunct Fellow at the Institute for Chinese Studies, New Delhi, I am highlighting the various scholars from India who have expertise on China. When it comes to the people and places in India where Chinese studies is done, a few places like Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Delhi University (DU) stand out due to their prominent location in New Delhi. JNU, my alma mater, has expertise in two schools - the School of Language Studies where Chinese is taught at the Undergraduate level and the School of International Studies, which hosts the Centre for East Asian Studies  and offers M.Phil and Ph.D programs. I have been privileged to be taught by Professor Alka Acharya  who also headed the Institute for Chinese Studies which is the pre-eminent Think Tank on Chinese studies in India. The Delhi University also has the Department of East Asian Studies  which has/had sev

WATCHING THE PANDEMIC

While all of you have been locked down at homes, here are some things that might have crossed your mind - China and Pandemics. So here is a list of movies that you watch which have connection/resonance to China and pandemics. Wolf Warrior - I & II The Wandering Earth Contagion Minority Report Wolf Warrior I & Wolf Warrior II - These movies have given rise to the coinage called - 'wolf warrior diplomacy'. But what is "wolf warrior" diplomacy, what does the name mean and where did it originate? The "wolf warriors" represent a completely different type of diplomat to the famously bland Chinese foreign representatives of the past few decades. Instead of long, verbose statements, these Chinese officials are taking to Twitter and other social media platforms to hit back directly at any criticism of China or the ruling Communist Party. "Wolf Warrior" is actually the title of a hugely-successful series of patriotic action films i

WATCHING FILMS

There are lot of films which portray events that had a lasting impact on international relations. While you are at home and possibly watching a lot of movies and TV series here is a list which you could watch to get some context to the important events in the 20th and 21st Century which have left an impact on IR.  The list below is from an elective that I teach every alternate year at JSIA. In that elective, I start with a book called " How to Read a Film " by James Monaca in which Chapter 3 , is quite useful. You could read the Chapter closely and then start watching the films, or you could just start watching films. That way, you will leave something for me to teach! MOVIE THEME All Quiet on the Western Front World War I The Wind That Shakes the Barley Civil wars, social revolution, and anti- colonialism The Great Dictator Comedy of Global Politics Saving Private Ryan World War II Grave of the Fireflies Nationalism and Identity Politics, Wo
